A Holistic Approach to Support

Social work is evidence-based, informed by clinical experience, research and the individual patient’s unique health situation.

Social work looks at the systemic issues that face an individual’s condition/outcome and walk alongside them as they perform a holistic, inward and outward dive into the systems that either support or further complicate this matter.

Sean Gedney

The loss of my father in 2008 brought me into social work with my family exploring anticipatory grief supports before he died. Through this experience, I gained an immense appreciation for (when possible) pre-emptive, and more importantly, ongoing counselling supports throughout one’s life. My favourite quality I have inherited from my father is an ability to be present for those who surround me..

Meet Sean – M.S.W / R.S.W

My love of supporting others started from a young age. Until recently and through my own counselling journey, I was largely “a nice guy” who supported the needs of others, while sacrificing my own needs. I have since seen that I had a long way to go to encouraging openness and transparency with those who surround me, installing boundaries, checks and balances along the way. It serves as recognition that we all benefit from evolving self-reflection and re-adjustment throughout the life course.

“ I’ve been seeing Sean for counselling since 2022 and it has been one of the best decisions I’ve made.

Our conversations dive into family, work, relationships, mental health, life and death, personal development, and occasionally they are just a simple check-in.

While beginning counselling can sometimes be daunting, Sean does a fantastic job of meeting you where you are at and helping you grow, by learning not only learning about yourself, but also about how others behaviours can affect you. He asks great questions, always remains engaged, and his perspectives and insights always ensure a meaningful and impactful conversation.

I highly recommend Sean to anyone looking for tools and support when going through a difficult time, or someone who is looking to self-reflect and grow from their experiences”

“ I found Sean at a difficult time in my life. I had just unexpectedly lost my dad and I needed help with my grief. My dad was my only living parent, and Sean very quickly understood my situation. For almost a year Sean and I met regularly, and I always looked forward to our sessions.

His approach balances compassion, humour, and insight effortlessly. It was easy for me to relate to Sean because he also has his own experiences with loss and grief. I felt that he truly understood what I was going through. I really appreciated that Sean was unpretentious in his approach too; we often made light of the more serious topics and it really helped take the edge off.

Sean always held space for me to talk about my feelings of sadness, which sometimes felt insurmountable. One of the big takeaways from our sessions was that Sean made me understand grief as an expression of love, and how that can translate to legacy. He had many suggestions for ways I could explore my dad’s life (and both parents lives) further and keep their memories alive.

I really enjoyed talking with Sean about the afterlife; a topic I thought about a lot. We both had our own experiences and thoughts, and I liked hearing his perspective. He encouraged me to keep exploring my curiosities on this subject. I am so grateful for Sean’s support, guidance, and insight. He has been instrumental in helping me during my grief journey and understanding life after loss. I would absolutely recommend Sean to anyone.

“Sean has been a tremendous support during some of the most difficult moments of my life. I always felt safe opening up to him, knowing I could discuss anything. He helped me navigate various issues in my relationships with family, partners, friends, and even in the workplace. Sean guided me to understand the root causes of some of my problems and gain deeper self-awareness.

As an immigrant and a native Spanish speaker, I appreciated his patience and sensitivity when I struggled to articulate my feelings. He helped me find the right words to express myself. Through our conversations, I’ve learned a lot, especially about self-appreciation, setting boundaries, and building trust with others.

When I began working with Sean, I also started medication. With his guidance, I’ve been able to manage that process, and I now feel ready to consider tapering off. I truly value our sessions and the growth I’ve experienced through them.”
